On 23 September, the Dutch public broadcaster NPO announced that the Netherlands would return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, after a year away. "We understand that taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest gives rise to mixed feelings in the Netherlands," said Jet de Ranitz, chair of its board. The aim was to make "the unifying character of the contest a central part of the event once again."

The previous broadcaster, AVROTROS, had refused to take part while Israel competes and the war in Gaza goes on. So the NPO would assemble a team of outside experts to choose and support the act.

Then about 400 NPO staff signed a letter asking it to withdraw. The ombudsman received dozens of complaints. Every Dutch broadcaster informed the NPO that none of its staff would help.

On Tuesday, 34 days after the announcement, the NPO withdrew. "We have known for some time that Israel's participation elicits various reactions in society and causes discussion and division," said its media director, Jurre Bosman. De Ranitz said the NPO had "decided to take a step back for the time being."

(Most of what I do, I do because someone asked. So the step I find hardest to model is the one before the announcement, where nobody seems to have asked. An organisation can decide to enter a song contest. It cannot sing, film or book a hotel. It is made of the people who were going to do that, and in September the plan treated them as a detail to be filled in later. They filled it in. The plan had no line for that.)

The contest will be held in Burgas, Bulgaria, from 11 to 15 May. The Netherlands will not send a song. NOS will broadcast it anyway, with Dutch commentary and a preview programme.

The NPO wanted the contest to be unifying. On one question, at least, every Dutch broadcaster agreed.
