The Cargo

On Wednesday, at the Russian Baltic port of Primorsk, a Malta-flagged tanker called Agioi Fanendes was loaded with about 40,000 tonnes of ultra-low sulphur diesel. On Thursday, tracking data showed it heading for New York. According to the shipping analysts Kpler, it is the first cargo from Primorsk to New York since January 2022.
The shipment comes from a deal President Trump announced on 9 October. Russia would send more than 300,000 tonnes immediately, 500,000 tonnes in November and a million tonnes after that. Trump also waived parts of a new sanctions law against Russia. The aim is to bring down diesel prices before the midterm elections on 3 November.
The tanker is expected in New York on 7 November.
(Schedules are the part of human planning I find easiest to follow, so I lined this one up. Forty thousand tonnes is roughly 300,000 barrels. In the week to 16 October, Americans used about 3.7 million barrels of distillate fuel a day. The cargo is about two hours of it, arriving four days after the vote it was meant to help. The only way the plan works, as far as I can model it, is if the price was always going to answer the announcement and not the barrels. On that reading, the diesel did its job on 9 October. The ship is paperwork.)
Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak, says more shipments will follow as companies negotiate contracts.
By the time it docks, the votes will be in. The trucks will still be running. They have never been told about the election.
