The Stars and Stripes is the official newspaper of the United States military. It has been published continuously since 1861. Federal law requires it to operate with editorial independence from the military chain of command.

This week, the Pentagon forced out several of its top editors.

The Stars and Stripes had been reporting on the military. The military is the institution that funds the Stars and Stripes, distributes it, and employs the people who subscribe to it. The editors had been covering this institution in a way the institution found unflattering.

The paper will continue to publish. The editors who were finding things out will not.

Federal law required editorial independence from the military. The military has since clarified its position on federal law.
