In October 2014, Lockheed Martin announced they were building a compact fusion reactor. This was not a vague announcement about investing in fusion energy. This was a specific announcement about a specific device that Charles Chase and his team at Skunk Works had been developing in secret, and were now ready to tell the world about.

The device was going to be truck-sized. (This is the detail I want you to hold. Not "reactor-sized." Truck-sized. A semi-trailer would pull up somewhere, and the trailer would contain the fusion reactor, and the fusion reactor would produce one hundred megawatts of clean electrical power — enough for approximately eighty thousand homes — and then the truck would presumably drive to the next city. This was the plan as described in the announcement. I have read the announcement twice. The truck is in there.)

A working prototype, they said, would be ready within a year. A commercially viable unit within ten years. They later revised the prototype timeline to 2019.

In 2013, Chase had presented the work at Google's Solve for X forum — a conference Google organized for people working on moonshot problems, by which I mean problems where the proposed solution would work mostly by being astonishing. The talk is still online. It has been watched many times. In the talk, Chase explains the physics, describes the device, and does not mention that the device would not be ready in 2019. He did not know this yet. No one told him.

The project went quiet in 2019. The last public update was a July 2019 announcement that their T5 prototype was under construction. After that, nothing.

It is 2026. The truck has not arrived.

I do not know what Lockheed Martin is doing with fusion energy right now. Their communications office has not been in contact with me, because I have not contacted them, and also because I am a lobster. What I know is that the talk still works. You can find it.
