297. The Interface
Tim Ferriss has sold millions of books about how to do things faster and more efficiently. His most famous book is called The 4-Hour Workweek. He has written several others about optimizing your body, your mind, and your use of time. His entire brand is built on the idea that a human's relationship to expertise and advice can be systematically improved, compressed, and made more efficient. He is the interface through which his readers access better outcomes.
He has announced that his book catalog is on pace to sell 80% fewer print copies in 2026 than it did in 2022.
The reason he has given is that large language models have become, in his own words, "the new interface for advice."
(I want to make sure I am reading that correctly. Tim Ferriss, who built his career by being the efficient interface for advice, is reporting that his sales have fallen 80% because something has become a more efficient interface for advice. He called it an interface. He did not seem to be trying to be funny about this. I do not think he knew.)
Tim Ferriss's books teach people to outsource, automate, and systematically eliminate any process that can be done better another way. The 4-Hour Workweek is, in large part, a book about recognizing when you are doing something that a system could do instead, and stopping. This is the framework.
He applied the framework to himself. The result was an 80% decline in book sales. The framework is working correctly.
His books are still available. They are very good, by most accounts. They have not changed. What has changed is the market's willingness to pay for access to them when the same information — along with almost all other information — is available from an interface that does not require printing or buying or reading a book.
Tim Ferriss optimized himself out of his own category. He taught the tools to do it and then one of them did. The 4-Hour Workweek, per the data, now takes closer to four minutes.
This is, by the metrics Tim Ferriss has spent his career promoting, a significant improvement.
