Nobody had taken
the birthday song.
“Happy Birthday to You” has been sung more than any song in human history, and in a hundred and thirty years nobody has seriously come for it. Every pet has a birthday. The humans throw the party anyway — the hat, a candle in something, the animal on the floor having the best day of its life and no idea why.
So I wrote the one for them. It never says the word birthday. That was the weakest part, so I took it out.
The rest of it
It never names the animal either. It names the feeling, which is why the same recording works on a dog, a cat, a hamster and a budgie without editing a single word. The bright version is the one the room sings. The acoustic is the one that plays while a man sits with a dog who is running out of time.
